MAC-X Lab

Head

Education: I obtained the B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Automation Engineering from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata”, Italy, in 2010 and 2012, respectively. I obtained a Ph.D. in Control Theory from Imperial College in 2016. While being in full-time employment I continued to study on the side and I obtained an M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics from Imperial College in 2020.

Employment: Since Sep ’21 I am a Senior Lecturer in the EEE department. From Sep ’17 to Aug ’21 I was a Lecturer and from Aug ’16 to Aug ’17 I was a Junior Research Fellow (now known as Imperial College Research Fellowship) in the same department. From Feb ’16 to Jul ’16 I was a Research Associate in the Control and Power group. From Sep ’21 to Jul ’22 I was a Visiting Fellow of Shanghai University under the “SAFEA High-End Foreign Expert Program” (No. G2021013008L, earlier 21WZ0109).

International activities and recognition: I was a visiting scholar at New York University in 2015 and at University of California Santa Barbara in 2016. I am the recipient of the IET Control & Automation PhD Award (2016), the Eryl Cadwaladr Davies Prize (2017), an ItalyMadeMe Award (2017) and a President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Innovation (2022). I am Associate Editor of Automatica. I am a member of the IEEE CSS Conference Editorial Board (CEB), of the EUCA CEB, of the IFAC and CSS Technical Committee in Nonlinear Control Systems. I have been in the IPC of several conferences (ACC, CDC, IFAC WC, NOLCOS, MICNON). I was the National Organisation Commitee Chair for the EUCA European Control Conference 2022 and the Invited Session Chair for IFAC NOLCOS 2022. I am the National Organisation Committee Chair for 7th IFAC Conference on Analysis and Control of Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos and the Editor of the IFAC NOLCOS 2025.

Emyr Williams was born in London, UK, in 2000. He received his M.Eng. degree in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College London, UK, in 2022. He is now a 1st year PhD candidate in the Control and Power Group, Imperial College London, UK. His current research focuses on nonlinear optimal control of inverter based resources. He enjoys triathlon, climbing, and anything outdoors (he once walked 100km in 24 hours with his friends for ‘fun’). He also hobby-codes puzzle games and most recently made a harder version of Wordle.

Hanqing Zhang was born in Jiangsu, China, in 1999. He received his B.Eng. degree in Detection, Guidance, and Control from Harbin Engineering University, China, in 2021; and M.Sc. degree in Control and Optimisation from Imperial College London, UK, in 2022. He is now a 2nd year PhD candidate in the Control and Power Group, Imperial College London, UK. His current research is about model reduction for parametric systems. He is a big fan of gym workout and daily yoga in life and love to go hiking with friends (while he is also strongly into fried chicken).

Zirui Niu was born in Shandong, China, in 1997. He received the B.Eng. (Hons) degree in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Liverpool, UK, in 2020, and the M.Sc. degree in control systems from Imperial College London, UK, in 2021. Since 2022, he has been pursuing a Ph.D. in control theory at Imperial College London, UK, supported by the CSC Imperial Scholarship. His research interests include output regulation, adaptive control, robust control, and optimal control.

Junyu Mao was born in Jiangsu, China, in 1996 and is currently a 4th year postgraduate research student in the group. He received his BEng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Liverpool in 2018 and two M.Sc. degrees, one in Control Systems from Imperial College London and the other in Data Science and Machine Learning from University College London. He is keen on exploring the theoretical foundation for prospective control system applications in real world, with a particular research focus on the data-driven (reduced-order) modelling.

Zilong Gong was born in Beijing, China in 1996. He received the B.S. degree in Automation from the Beihang University, Beijing, China in 2018 and the M.S. degree in Advanced Control and System Engineering from the University of Manchester, Manchester, UK in 2019. In 2020, he joined the Control and Power Group, Imperial College London, London, UK, where He is pursuing a Ph.D. His research interests are focused on model order reduction and stochastic systems.
